Cafba Website Updates

  • The Main Page!

The main entry page at www.cafba.ca has caused quite a stir at cafba. Seems not everyone wants Mr Don Cherry to remain on The Coaches' Corner after this hockey year is over.

As stated in our last issue of the cafba news, I think his removal from Hockey Night In Canada will be another loss of tradition that this country cannot afford.

Too many traditions have gone by the wayside. Our Society is changing way too fast and not necessarily for the better.

If you don't agree let me know. I'd like to hear your opinion.

If you do agree, then go now to www.savedoncherry.ca and cast your vote in support of keeping the Coach employed.

    Check www.cafba.ca for more information.

Let us know what your issues are!

  • Trivia
  • Have you signed up for the summer trivia contest on the newsgroup?

This years contest promises to be a hoot as the format and challenge will be different from prior years.

    This edition's trivia question is:

Who are Comox's newest residents? Or soon to be at least!
The East's loss is the West's gain!

Find the answer on the newsgroup

Last editions trivia question: Which musical BRAT is leaving the Maritimes and moving to Ottawa? - answer: Rasta

Whose Rasta, you say? Read the newsgroup and find out! He is our premiere musicman available for celebrations of all kinds. Especially when they involve wings and a certain smooth liquid to wash them down with.

      Are We Getting Old?

Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things. Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of this year's incoming freshmen.

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1985-6.

      Here's this year's list:

    • They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.
    • Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
    • Bottle caps have always been screw off and Plastic.
    • The CD was introduced the year they were born.
    • They have always had an answering machine.
    • They have always had cable.
    • They cannot fathom not having a remote control.
    • Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show. Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.
    • They never took a swim and thought about Jaws. They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.
    • They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.
    • They never heard: "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", or "de plane Boss, de plane".
    • They do not care who shot J R. and have no idea who J. R. even is.
    • McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers
    • They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

What can you remember? Send in your recollections for the next newsletter.

  • Upcoming Airshows
  • Yes, it's that time of year again. Your local Air Shows are back. This years collection is bigger and better than ever.

What do you remember the most about attending an air show when you were young? Check out these shows, they will bring back all those great memories.

  • Cafba Website Navigation
  • Did you know!

The Who Were Your Neighbours? pages are sorted by bases in 5 year intervals. Your name appears starting at the first year you moved to the base. Well, they are grouped together in 5 year intervals. Like 1955 then 1960 then 1965. If you moved there in 1958 and stayed until 1963 look for your name under the base for 1955.

It is a good idea to check the sections immediately before and after yours to see other names that may appear that you recognize.

For those of you who couldn't remember the dates you lived there the database just adds xxxx-xxxx and these names appear at the beginning of the base list.

Some of you didn't put bases at all when you registered. If you want your name added to the neighbours pages now, send me an email with your cafba ID #, the base names and the years you lived there.

Do you have a suggestion on how we can improve the site? Please let us know!

  • Base Updates
  • I know that lots of people have been exploring their past recently and have made visits to the bases where we used to live.

Not all of us have the luxury of being able to travel back to our past but we all wonder what it is like today!

Why not share your visit for all to read by writing a review for the cafba news. Let us know what has changed, how you felt, share some memories or even pictures

  • Base Recollections:
    • Does any one remember the "crows trees" in Marville, that old castle-fort place in Lahr, boots of beer in Baden..... What a life!!!

    • Does anybody remember sneaking into the drive in, we got 8 in one time in Herb's VW bug. Or how about dances at the social centre before it became Canex and we got teen town.

    • On CFB Ottawa South....I WENT BACK THIS PAST APRIL AND IT IS TERRIBLE WHAT THEY HAVE DONE TO THE PLACE,THE POOLS AND TRACK ARE GONE,THE CANEX IS DOWN,ALL THE MESSES AND A CHURCH ARE DOWN ALSO...SEEMS EVERY BASE I RETURN TO VISIT HAS SOME WAY BEEN RIPPED APART AND HALF TORN DOWN OR CLOSED,WHAT A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS.

    • Most fond memories at Bagotville - Boy Scouts, the swimming pool & the base gym on weekends. The bowling and shooting club ;as well as the teen curling and of course the TEEN CLUB DANCES !

Do you have a fond memory of your base? Send it in and let others share in those memories!

    • On the upcoming summer trivia contest it was suggested that contestants be divided like this:
      • Old brats VS Young brats
      • - Is it okay if we lie about our age?
      • and questions come from Brat memories or brat sites. Send me the questions at webmaster@cafba.ca
    • We need to define the term old vs young what is the cut off? For myself I don't feel or think old. What does anybody else think?
    • Alan, are us young brats playing against the old brats? This from someone whose birthday candles count the decades not the years!
